Trade Under Pressure: Policy Meets Geopolitical Reality

The Next Few Days Could Redefine Global Trade

From bombings in the Middle East to tariff deadlines in Washington, global trade is under mounting pressure. And with August 1 just days away, businesses across industries are bracing for impact. For many, the next phase of tariffs could alter supply chains in real time, especially as legal battles drag on and geopolitical risks rise.

What’s New?

Geopolitical Tensions Remain High:

The U.S.–Iran standoff still threatens to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for 20% of global oil and gas trade. Shipping delays, rising surcharges, and inflation ripple risks remain especially acute for Asia, Europe, and U.S. routes.

Tariff Uncertainty Deepens:
The contested “Liberation Day” tariffs remain in force. A federal court stay has paused any rollback, and no relief is expected before late summer. A critical hearing on July 31 is next, but any Supreme Court review could stretch into 2026.

Tariff & Legal Landscape: Countdown to August 1

Reciprocal Tariffs – What’s at Stake?
Unless new trade deals are finalized, the U.S. will implement steep new tariffs starting August 1:

  • 30% on goods from the EU and Mexico
  • 35% in Canada
  • 50% in Brazil
  • 15–20% for others, with some categories reaching 50%

Some countries, such as Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the UK, have already secured agreements to stabilize rates at lower levels.

Global Countermeasures Taking Shape:

  • The EU has prepared €93 billion in counter-tariffs (20–30%) to be activated by August 7 if talks with the U.S. break down.
  • The U.S. is also expanding Section 232 actions, starting with a 50% copper tariff on August 1 and new investigations into polysilicon, drones, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals that could trigger more duties by year-end.

What’s Making Headlines

  • Shipping and insurance costs continue rising, especially for energy, metals, electronics, and auto parts.
  • Manufacturers are scrambling to secure alternative suppliers and build inventory buffers.
  • AI-powered logistics and SCaaS platforms are gaining traction for rapid modeling and agile scenario planning.

What Does It Mean for Your Business?

Don’t go it alone. We’ve been hearing from too many businesses left to figure things out on their own, navigating shifting tariffs, sourcing disruptions, and customs confusion without the support they need.

We believe no one should have to face these challenges solo. You deserve a partner who’s proactive, informed, and fully invested in your success.

Whether it’s reviewing sourcing strategies, building contingency plans, or staying ahead of the next policy shift, we’re here to help you move fast, move smart, and move with purpose.

Due to the speed of tariff news, we will be updating this LinkedIn newsletter with the latest info.

4. What Sets Leaders Apart? Purpose at the Core of the Business Model

Sustainability isn’t a side project. It’s a strategy.

According to a recent report by Boston Consulting Group (June 2025), the companies that are outperforming others in impact and resilience share one thing in common: they’ve made sustainability central to how their business works—not just how it looks.

Top innovators are:

  • Embedding sustainability into their core operations
  • Rethinking value chains to include circularity and accountability
  • Partnering across ecosystems to drive purpose at scale
  • And using business model innovation as a competitive advantage

At Vector, this resonates deeply. For us, logistics has never been just about moving goods. It’s about moving purpose, value, and impact. And this report confirms that purpose-driven logistics is no longer optional. It’s what the future demands.

Trade Under Pressure: When Policy Meets Geopolitical Reality

Middle East Bombings Heighten Global Trade Risks; All Eyes on the Strait of Hormuz

The most urgent story this month is the series of bombings and escalating military conflict between the United States and Iran. The fallout for global trade remains uncertain, but a big concern is Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical oil shipping chokepoint.

Roughly 20% of global oil and gas flows through this narrow passage, and any disruption could send shockwaves through energy markets, drive up shipping and insurance costs, and trigger inflation worldwide. Major economies in Asia, Europe, and beyond are bracing for possible supply chain disruptions and price volatility as the situation evolves.

What’s the Impact?

  • Shipping Delays: Expect extended transit times, especially for Asia–Europe and Asia–U.S. routes.
  • Rising Costs: Spot rates and surcharges are climbing as carriers adjust to new risks.
  • Supply Chain Uncertainty: Manufacturers and retailers are scrambling to secure alternative routes and inventory buffers.

Legal Landscape: No Relief Yet on Tariffs

While security dominates the headlines, the tariff environment remains just as volatile. Here’s where things stand:

  • The contested “Liberation Day” tariffs are still in force. In May, a lower court found the administration had exceeded its authority, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit extended a stay, so no rollback yet.
  • Next milestone: A hearing is scheduled for July 31, with no immediate relief expected before late summer.
  • Supreme Court status: A petition for review is pending, but a final verdict could stretch into mid-2026.

US–China Tariff Breakdown

Tariffs on Chinese goods remain layered and punitive, with effective rates depending on product category:

  • Baseline Tariff (IEEPA): 10% on all Chinese imports
  • Fentanyl-linked Goods: +20% (Total: 30%)
  • Section 301 Goods (e.g., tech, machinery): +25% (Total: 35%)
  • Steel-content Appliances (effective June 23): +50% on the steel portion (e.g., fridges, washers)

Average U.S. tariff on Chinese goods: Over 50%

China’s average tariff on U.S. goods: ~33%

Trade Talks & Global Responses

  • U.S.–China Framework Deal (London, June 10): Some reciprocal tariffs eased to 10%, but most compound tariffs remain above 30%.
  • EU–U.S. Standoff: The EU is preparing 25% retaliatory tariffs on American whiskey and soybeans if the U.S. moves forward with a proposed 50% tariff on EU imports by July 9.
  • U.K.–U.S. Agreement: The U.K. is the only major economy to formalize a post-Liberation Day trade deal with the U.S.

Logistics & Supply Chain Trends

  • Air Freight: U.S.–China cargo volumes dropped sharply in June, following a brief May spike likely driven by inventory hedging.
  • Ocean Freight: Rates are falling on many West Coast routes, softening Peak Season Surcharges.
  • Shifting Strategies: Companies are responding with sourcing diversification, AI-powered logistics, and increased interest in SCaaS (Supply Chain as a Service) models to remain resilient.

What Does It Mean for Your Business?

Don’t go it alone. We’ve been hearing from too many businesses left to figure things out on their own, navigating shifting tariffs, sourcing disruptions, and customs confusion without the support they need.

Negociaciones Comerciales y Respuestas Globales

  • Acuerdo EE.

Tariff Update: Court Blocks “Liberation Day” Tariffs. What’s Next?

Tariffs have dominated 2025’s supply chain headlines, but a major legal decision on May 28 is shaking up the landscape. A U.S. federal court has blocked the implementation of the “Liberation Day” tariffs, which were set to sharply increase duties on hundreds of billions of dollars in Chinese imports starting June 1.

What Just Happened?

  • Court Ruling: The court sided with a coalition of small businesses, ruling that the administration’s new tariffs exceeded executive authority and failed to follow required procedures.
  • Immediate Impact: The planned tariff hikes, some as high as 60% on key categories like electronics, machinery, and consumer goods, are now on hold.
  • Relief for Importers: This decision brings immediate relief to importers and exporters who were bracing for a new wave of cost increases and supply chain disruptions.

What’s at Stake?

  • Uncertainty Remains: The administration has vowed to appeal, but for now, the previous tariff rates remain in effect.
  • Ongoing Negotiations: The U.S. and China are still in talks over broader trade terms, but this ruling gives businesses breathing room to plan ahead.
  • Small Business Victory: The lawsuit was led by small and mid-sized businesses, many of whom argued that steep tariffs would threaten jobs and drive up prices for consumers.

Global Reactions

  • China: Welcomed the ruling and called for further tariff reductions.
  • European Union & UK: Continue to monitor U.S. policy, with their own retaliatory tariffs and trade negotiations ongoing.
  • North America: Mexico and Canada’s tariff reviews are still expected by July 8.

Industry Moves & Insights

  • Supply Chain Shifts: Companies like Apple and major retailers are reassessing sourcing strategies in light of the uncertainty.
  • Tech & Manufacturing: Investment in alternative supply chains and AI-driven logistics continues to accelerate.
  • Key Trends: AI integration, ESG-driven sourcing, and SCaaS (Supply Chain as a Service) remain top priorities for 2025.

What Should You Do Now?

Don’t go it alone. We’ve been hearing from too many businesses left to figure things out on their own, navigating shifting tariffs, sourcing disruptions, and customs confusion without the support they need.

April Outlook: Tariff Pressure Mounts, but Mexico and Canada Offer a Strategic Advantage

As of April 17, 2025, new U.S. tariffs and shifting global trade dynamics are forcing companies to reevaluate sourcing, pricing, and supply chain resilience. With over 60 countries now affected by a new 10% import tariff, inflation risks are rising, and the need for strategic adaptation has never been greater. However, there’s a silver lining for North America—Mexico and Canada have been exempted from the new tariff wave, presenting unique opportunities for nearshoring and cost containment.

  • New U.S. Tariffs on Over 60 Countries

Implementation. A new 10% tariff is now in place on imports from over 60 countries. While “reciprocal” tariffs (as high as 47%) have been paused for 90 days, the baseline 10% duty remains active across most goods, with exceptions for smartphones, computers, and semiconductors.

Impact. This move is expected to push consumer inflation upward—economists estimate that every 10% tariff results in a 4% price increase for end users. Supply chain costs are expected to rise across electronics, manufacturing, and consumer goods.

  • Mexico and Canada: Supply Chain Safe Havens

Exemption Status. Mexico and Canada are exempt from the new 10% tariff, offering businesses a competitive edge.

Why it matters:

Nearshoring Gains Momentum: Mexico’s proximity and low manufacturing costs (wages nearly 4x lower than U.S. averages) are making it a favored option for companies moving production out of Asia.

Fresh Produce Advantage: Over 80% of U.S. vegetable imports come from Mexico, and this trade flow remains unaffected.

Auto & Industrial Sectors: While some items still face the original 25% tariff (e.g., steel and aluminum not covered by USMCA), the relative positioning of Mexico remains strong.

  • Other Notable Developments

Semiconductors: The U.S. Commerce Department is preparing new chip-specific tariffs, expected within 1–2 months.

China’s Retaliation: Tariffs on all U.S. imports were raised to 125%. Export controls on rare earths and magnets continue to impact the green tech and defense sectors.

EU & UK Responses: The EU has paused $23B in retaliatory tariffs for negotiations. The UK aligns with the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, risking potential U.S. backlash.

What This Means for Your Business

With tariffs reshaping trade routes, costs, and competitiveness, it’s time to act, not wait.

Whether you’re:

  • Exploring new sourcing options
  • Recalibrating your logistics strategy
  • Considering Foreign Trade Zones (FTZs)
  • Securing warehousing ahead of tariff-related surges
  • Looking for alternative lanes or faster transit times

We’re here to help you move fast, smart, and ahead of the curve.

Due to the speed of tariff news, we will be updating this LinkedIn newsletter with the latest info.

Navigating Turbulence: How New Tariffs Are Redifining Global Supply Chains

As of March 27, 2025, significant tariff developments are reshaping global trade, requiring immediate strategic responses from businesses to ensure supply chain resilience and operational stability.

  • Auto Industry Tariffs

Implementation Date: President Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and foreign-made auto parts, effective no later than May 3, 2025.

Impact: Vehicle prices could increase between $3,000 and $6,000, with daily vehicle production potentially dropping by 30% or about 20,000 units. Major automaker stocks experienced sharp declines in after-hours trading.

  • Tariffs and U.S.-China Relations

China Tariffs: A 20% tariff on Chinese imports remains in effect. However, President Trump indicated openness to reducing these tariffs to facilitate TikTok’s sale to a non-Chinese buyer, potentially signaling a shift in trade relations. The TikTok deal could also affect broader U.S.-China economic negotiations.

China’s Response: China has retaliated by imposing tariffs (effective March 10, 2025), including 15% on chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton, and 10% on sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, and dairy products, significantly impacting U.S. agriculture.

  • North American Tariff Responses

Mexico: Mexico is preparing retaliatory tariffs against U.S. goods; specific details will be announced soon. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico seeks collaborative solutions and emphasized the importance of safeguarding national economic interests.

Canada: Canada announced plans for retaliatory tariffs totaling approximately C$155 billion. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized significant disruptions expected in the integrated North American automotive supply chain.

  • European Union Reaction

The EU is formulating retaliatory measures on up to $28 billion of U.S. imports, focusing particularly on automotive and industrial products. Germany and France advocate for strong counteractions, warning of potential trade escalation.

  • Sector-Specific Impacts

Automotive: Costs are rising significantly, disrupting North American production and supply chains. The United Auto Workers union welcomed the tariffs, anticipating domestic job creation.

Agriculture: Tariff-related input cost increases and market access reductions threaten U.S. agricultural exports, particularly soybeans and pork.

Pharmaceuticals: Potential 20% tariffs on EU pharmaceuticals could significantly increase drug manufacturing costs, impacting affordability and innovation.

Steel & Aluminum: A global 25% tariff is driving higher costs in construction and heavy manufacturing, pushing companies toward alternative sourcing strategies.

The global trade landscape remains volatile. Vector Global Logistics is committed to providing timely insights and personalized strategies to maintain supply chain resilience. For tailored advice, contact our team directly—we’re here to guide you through these challenging times.

We’ve Opened a New Office in Ukraine—Here’s Why It Matters

This week, we were proud to share something deeply meaningful for all of us at Vector Global Logistics:

We’ve officially opened our newest office in Lviv, Ukraine.

This isn’t just another expansion. It’s a reflection of our long-standing commitment to the people of Ukraine—and a powerful next step in our journey to stand with them in both word and action.

Since shortly after the invasion in February 2022, we’ve been actively supporting Ukraine through our Leveraging Logistics for Ukraine initiative. What started as an immediate response—driven by outrage, compassion, and purpose—has evolved into a lasting effort. Over the past few years, we’ve hosted bi-monthly Zoom calls, produced podcast episodes, connected partners, and most importantly, provided critical logistics support where it’s been needed most.

Opening our Lviv office is the natural continuation of that commitment.

“We are deeply committed to the people and communities of Ukraine and the region,” said our Co-Founder and Managing Director, Enrique Alvarez. “We stand firm against autocratic regimes, bullies, and senseless political conflicts, and we believe in leveraging our expertise to help rebuild and unite.”

He’s right. This new office is about using our capabilities to uplift communities, support local economies, and build a brighter, more connected future—one rooted in collaboration and resilience.

As Co-Founder and Managing Director Brian Oxley also put it:

“Throughout the war, we’ve supported Ukraine with humanitarian aid, and now, we’re honored to take the next step. This is about providing the critical supply chain and logistic solutions needed to restore infrastructure, revive industries, and move essential goods where they’re needed most.”

Vector is headquartered in Atlanta, has offices across Latin America, and has team members around the globe. This expansion into Ukraine not only helps us serve our clients better—it strengthens our mission of Logistics With Purpose®.

We’re proud to be a Certified B Corporation™ and even prouder to continue standing with Ukraine.
